Jonathan Slaght is a PhD student working in far eastern Russia figuring out what kind of environment Blakiston’s fish owl needs for survival. Part nature book, part adventure story, his search is set in Primorye, a region of forests you’ve likely never heard of, inhabited by tigers, bears, loggers, strange loners, and fish owls. It’s the sort of place that seems to be trying to kill you at all times. Slaght needs to be equal parts Bear Grylls and David Attenborough, but there are no comfortable hotels at the end of the day. Slaght easily takes you along so you can imagine the cold and rough life, meet his team of misfits and fanatics, and enjoy his adventure, all without the discomforts and danger. And then there are also the owls, the elusive centrepiece of the book.
