Title: Living Music – A Century Of Manawatu Community Music
Author: DONALDSON GUY / POOLE RUSSELL

One hundred years have passed since the Palmerston North Girls’ Music Club came into being in 1925. Just over eighty years ago, in 1944, a second organisation, the Dorian Music Society, arrived on the Palmerston North scene.
Both organisations aimed to foster appreciation of classical music and to encourage young people to perform. The main difference was that the Dorian Music Society admitted both men and women, whereas the Club was female-only. In 1983 the two groups merged to create Musica Viva Manawatu Incorporated, which continues a lively existence up to the present day.

This book recounts the history of these organisations: the movers and shapers, the performers, and – above all – the music that they created.
